Since 1950 when the organization spearheaded legislation to require licensing of opticians, the North Carolina Opticians Association has operated as a non-profit trade organization that works to improve the welfare of the North Carolina licensed optician through education, information and legislative action.

Along with continuing education sessions throughout the year, the NCOA sponsors a three day annual convention each year. The annual meeting provides approximately 20 hours of continuing education and an exhibit hall with vendor booths manned by some of the top optical companies in the world. This exhibit is open to all attendees.
